Beef and Wing Brawl Recap

This past weekend the Beef and Wing gaming club held their first annual Beef and Wing Brawl in Buffalo NY. The format for the event was 1250 points played over 4 rounds. Forge World and 30k armies were allowed. Lords of War, Apocalypse, and Escalation were not allowed. All games were played on 4x4 tables due to the lower point levels and each table was comprised of custom terrain. The event was held in a banquet hall at a indoor Golfing Range complex complete with a full bar and restaurant and as part of the entry fee the Beef and Wing club included free pizza and wings and an open bar for 2 hours. So how did the first time event fare? Read below to find out more.

Da Boyz GT: T - 4 Weeks - Crispy

We're a month out from Da Boyz and it's crunch time to get everything finished. On top of that, I'll be heading down to the Warstore Weekend to participate in the Colonial Fantasy GT Optimally, I want to get everything wrapped up over the next week and a half.

The Colonial has historically been in the spring, but this year they split the event in to 2. The 40K event is still in April, but the Fantasy portion is being run at the Warstore Weekend. With the Colonial moved to the beginning of November, our gaming group didn't think we'd be able to swing 2 GT's in a month (Colonial Nov 1-3 & Da Boyz 22-24). Well, it turns out that there's a lull of activity before the holidays and we all wanted to get a few more games in before the holiday hibernation comes along.

On the list of things I need to finish, I can cross off the Movement Trays, Trolls, and Night Goblins (see below the fold). Now I'm just down to touch-ups and single models. For single models, I still have a Savage Orc Shaman, and a Night Goblin Shaman. In terms of touch-ups, I'd like to redo the wood parts of a few chariots I have, and maybe even re-paint my Arachnarok.

Here's a taste of my trolls. Check out below the fold for more Troll pictures, Night Gobbos, Fanatics, and movement trays.

Crossroads 2013 GT Wrap-up

It seems like we’re in the middle of tournament season with multiple GT’s going off every month. Jay just made it back from playing in the Warmaster’s GT and that same weekend I helped run Crossroads GT. On the horizon, we still have Da Boyz (of course), Battle for Salvation (someday when the finances work out, I want to go), and the Colonial/Warstore Weekend (I've gone to the past 2 Colonial Fantasy GTs and it's been a great time). That's just in the NorthEast.

Getting back to Crossroads, Corey Reynolds continues to grow the event, and this year we brought in 102 players. Not too shabby for an event that’s only advertising is word of mouth. I also think Crossroads is the largest Fantasy GT outside of Adepticon.

Without further ado, here are the full results.

Da Boyz GT: T - 9 Weeks - Crispy

The last two weeks have flown by with hobby time taking the back burner. School has started for the Kiddo, and this past weekend I missed out on the monthly Millennium tournament in favor of supporting my wife and her sister as they tackled a 5K Zombie Mud Run. I was content hanging out with my daughter as a spectator. Aside from that, Gymnastics for my girl has also started up and I've gotten my fair share of weird looks from the other parents when I pull out the Citadel Paint Station and start working on Night Goblins. Hey, I have an hour to burn and things to do, stop giving me dirty looks.

BZMR

In terms of hobby stuff, I've managed to start up a few projects for the GT and I've also found a few that help me procrastinate. If you're interested in more Orc and Goblin stuff, check it out below the fold.

DaBoyz GT T - 12 Weeks

So it begins!  Well, it kinda already has... but my personal count down starts 12 weeks out which is today!  DaBoyz GT 2013 is coming quickly and I have a pretty good start, but I also have an 19 month old running around and sucking the energy out of me.  So, finishing everything will still be a challenge.

Game 5 of PTGRTS's Annual GT, Results, Comp & Missions

Today I'll finish up my coverage of Play the Game, Read the Story's Annual GT (Check out Games 1&2 and 3&4). For the second year in a row, my final game was going to be against a Grey Knights player (though not the same player). Entering the final round last year, the two of us were 4-0. After it, I was 4-1. This year, I was facing 2 Dreadknights, a bunch of Terminators, Coteaz, and Hammer and Anvil Deployment. I was worried.

Check out my game, the full event results, and what I thought of the missions and comp below the fold. Also, please leave me a comment on what you think. I have a couple of questions that I'd like to crowd-source.

1500Point - Play the Game, Read the Story GT Report - Games 3 & 4

Last week I covered my first 2 games of Play the Game, Read the Story’s annual GT (You can check them out here). This week I'll be hitting the 3rd & 4th games against an Ork Horde lead by Ghazghkull, and a near mirror match against my 3rd Tyranid opponent of the day.

Check out both games below the fold:

1500Point - Play the Game, Read the Story GT Report - Games 1 & 2

July in Syracuse means it’s time for Play the Game, Read the Story’s annual GT. Last year I managed to snag 2nd overall, so I was looking forward to this year’s event and hoping for a repeat performance. This year’s event was a single day, 5-round, 1500point tournament, bringing in just over 30 players. The scoring weighed heavily on battle (0-9/game), but also included soft scores: Paint (0-10), Sportsmanship (0-5), and Comp (0-10). Having attended a few of their events over the past year, I felt that I had a good grasp on what they were looking for in comp, and what kind of armies I’d likely see.
Here’s what I brought:
HQ
Tyranid Prime w/ Lash Whip & Bone Sword, Toxin Sacs

Elite
2 Hive Guard
5 Ymgarls

Troops
12 Termagants
Tervigon w/ Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs and +2 Powers
5 Genestealers w/ Broodlord

Fast Attack
5 Shrikes w/ Lash Whip & Bone Sword, Toxin Sacs

Heavy Support
2 Carnifex w/ 2X Twin Link Devourers
3 Biovores

Total: 1496

In the past 3 years, I can only remember squaring off against 3 other Tyranid players (2 of which are my co-authors Hyv3mynd & DaCock), but somehow I managed to draw 3 on this day. Below the fold are bat-reps from my first 2 games.

Crossroads Spring Break GT Wrap-up

The first Crossroads Spring Break GT is in the can, and it was a hell of a time. Corey Reynolds, the organizer and head TO, runs a pretty tight ship, and everything ran smoothly. I helped Corey with the paint judging, played a few games as the ringer, and acted as a general data entry monkey. I have to say that I had 3 fantastic games, and got to see a ton of great armies. Below, I'll include a smattering of the armies present, the results and the award winners.

Here is where you can find all the winners and the full results.

First and foremost, The Overall Winner: Matt Cassidy of the Lost Legion running Empire
While Matt did win overall, he shamed himself by not getting max points in all categories. As a result, he had to commit seppuku with his trophy sword.

Fantasy GT this Weekend!

This weekend is Crossroads Spring Break GT out in Horsehead’s NY. I know it’s pretty short notice, but if you play fantasy and don’t have plans for the weekend, we’re going to be accepting players up until Friday. Email the TO (Corey) and let him know you'd like to come. Right now, we’re looking at around 50-60 players. Not too shabby for an event initially planned just 2 months ago.

I’ll be paint judging, and I might even get a game in as the ringer. Friday night is going to be a Warmachine tournament (a few locals just threw this together, so I have few details), and Saturday night we’re going to be running a Dominion tournament. I’ll do an event wrap-up next week, but if you’re up to it, come on down.

Speaking of Fantasy, I’ve been slowly plugging away at Savage Orcs, and I have to say that for being pretty much naked, they have a ridiculous amount of detail that needs to be painted on. The loin cloths, the bones, the belts, the weapons, and not to mention the tattoos, all make for a time/tarpit. Check em out below the fold.

The Cost of Attending GTs and a Few on the Horizon

A few weeks back, I saw a blog post talking about the costs of attending a GT. After a few paragraphs outlining the hundreds of dollars you have to spend, I stopped reading. It may be that the Northeast is a GT rich environment, but I was able to attend 3 GTs last year for under $200/event.

The reason I bring it up is because GTs are a hell of a time. Everyone should consider going to one, and it's not that much of a drain on the pocket if you can plan accordingly. Let's take last year's Colonial GT as an example. The key is to get a group together to split the costs:
