hyv3mynd's Eldar + Dark Eldar @ September 1850pt RTT: Game #2

hyv3mynd
After a strong victory in round #1, I was paired against Craig's CSM+Daemons for round #2. I've faced Craig several times in the past and he's always given me tough games, also defeating me on several occasions. Believe it or not, this is also the first time I've had to face multiple heldrakes in a 1v1 tournament setting.

The Court of the Scarab King

Grubnards GT Countdown T-8 weeks
Wow, only 8 weeks until the GT and there is still a lot to do. Time seems to go by fast when you are gearing up for a big GT. This past week I took the plunge and started working on a new table that I will be bringing to the GT this year, along with my Tyranid terrain and ancient ruins terrain. Besides finishing painting my army I still need to finish painting up the last of my Tyranid terrain, build a display board for my Tau, and build my new necron table, or as I am referring to as, the Court of the Scarab King. It has a nice ring to it, eh?
Now due to time constraints of gearing up for the GT and trying to type up my how-to series on terrain, I am only going to focus on work in progress shots for the necron terrain now and then once the GT is done I'll go back and type up the steps I used to create the necron terrain. So for now onto the pics....

Da Boyz GT: T - 8 Weeks

The last week has seen a big emphasis on Battle Reports for the previous weekend's tournament. One of my big takeaways form the tournament was I desperately need to get the rest of my units painted - having black primed Flesh Hounds really hurt my painting score and almost cost me my second place finish. In fact, a fully painted army may have secured a first place finish for the tournament.
I managed to get a basecoat on all of the flesh hounds so far - that is with a brush still since I have not had time to really break into the airbrushing since my last article.

I'm a little behind my co-authors in reporting on last Saturday's tournament, but that's OK. Now you're familiar with the missions and terrain. Here's the list I ended up taking. It's close to my list for DaBoyz GT, with a few extra vehicle upgrades to make up for a couple models I haven't assembled yet.

Da Boyz GT: T - 9 Weeks - Practice Tournament-G3

It is the last round of the tournament and I had forgotten how tiring 3 straight games of 40k can be - I am going to need to train (or something?) for the upcoming GT. I think the biggest problem is reaching across the table - shooting armies are definitely easier on your back.
In the first game of the tournament I took down a GK player with a little help from the Warp Storm table and in the second game the GK looked to purge the Daemon threat - but were rebuffed again. This puts me at 2 - 0 thus far along with 4 other players (SM, Eldar/DE, IG and Tyranids). I drew the Tyranid matchup at the second table which would be my first tournament game at Millenium against non-GK since last November.

The last two weeks have flown by with hobby time taking the back burner. School has started for the Kiddo, and this past weekend I missed out on the monthly Millennium tournament in favor of supporting my wife and her sister as they tackled a 5K Zombie Mud Run. I was content hanging out with my daughter as a spectator. Aside from that, Gymnastics for my girl has also started up and I've gotten my fair share of weird looks from the other parents when I pull out the Citadel Paint Station and start working on Night Goblins. Hey, I have an hour to burn and things to do, stop giving me dirty looks.
In terms of hobby stuff, I've managed to start up a few projects for the GT and I've also found a few that help me procrastinate. If you're interested in more Orc and Goblin stuff, check it out below the fold.

Da Boyz GT Practice Games
This past weekend I attended the month tournament at Millennium Games along with the other members of The Grand Strategery and co-authors of the Mandulian Chapel. The event format was 1850pts with no comp restrictions but the guys from the Grand Strategery (and the guys from Beef and Wing) decided that we would run our lists using the GT format to test out our lists. Now this would mean that most of our opponents would be playing lists without any restrictions but this would help us see how well our lists would hold up in an all comers format.
As most of you know I would be bringing my Tau. Prior to this weekend I have only had one other game with my Tau since the new codex came out and this was also going to be my first games using the riptide and Missile Pod broadsides so this weekend was going to test my abilities using this army.

With a victory in the first game of the tournament I was in rare company - with approximately half the field - of being undefeated. That game was against a Grey Knight opponent and the battle report can be found here. This game saw me matched up on a fairly open table - there is a hint on the table as to my opponent's army.
It appears Grey Knights (GK) are appropriately hunting Daemons. I discuss my list (with a swap of a fiend for a Locus of Fury) here. My opponent brought a hybrid mech list with a pair of Dreadknights, summarized below:

This weekend I had the chance to attend an 1850 tournament at Millennium Games in Rochester. This would be the first game I had played in a few months - and it would be the first tournament I had played since April of this year. As such, it was a perfect opportunity to test out my Da Boyz GT list and start to get familiar with how it played.

I'm pretty excited about this week. Tomorrow is our first local tournament to run 1850pts in many months, so I get to use my full GT list for the first time. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the 1,000pt and 1,500pt events for the faster games and added rounds, but I'm really looking forward to playing with all the toys now.

This
past week I was able to make progress on painting my riptide. I've
finished the legs, torso, and head and I've now started on the jet pack.
My goal is to get the base coats finished by Thursday
so that I can assemble the model in time for this weekends tournament
at Millennium Games. I also primed my broadsides and hope to get at
least 1 coat of paint on them in time for the weekend as well. The format for this weekend's event is 1850 pts and I believe just book missions but many of us will be using this format to test out our GT lists. I am hoping to get a feel for how my army plays and learn what works and what does not. To see what I will be bringing to the tournament you can see my list here.

This week has been a tough one to get a lot of preparation completed for Da Boyz - with the Fall rounding out and cars that need maintenance, driveways that need repair and other assorted (neglected) home projects I did not get a chance to hit the paintbrush as much as I would have liked. In spite of that, I made enough time to push forward some significant progress - with the goal towards having the army ready to go by the monthly tournament at Millenium Games. I had a chance to clean up the basement - and my gaming area - this week with all the other chores so I could snap a shot of my Daemons laid out across the table:

It's been a boring week on the hobby front as I've been scrambling to assemble and prime the final pieces of my 1850pt GT list. I was able to finally sit down with a brush and work on the spirit seer's mask.

We’re 11 weeks out from Da Boyz GT and it looks like I’ll
be representing the Fantasy side for the blog. This will be my 4th
year at Da Boyz, and 2nd year playing fantasy. I’m looking to pick
up a few more painting points and maybe bump my placement up from last year’s
10th overall finish. Sadly, my dismal generalship will probably ruin
those plans.

Grubnards GT Countdown T-11 weeks

In the theme established by Hyv3Mynd, I will be posting updates of my trials and tribulations as the Da Boyz GT draws near with my army list updates, display board, and terrain building.
For 2013 I will be reviving my Tau army. The Tau were what initially drew me into 40k and I've been collecting them towards the end of 3rd edition but due to a lackluster codex over the past few years I was always hesitant on playing them at a major GT but with the release of the new codex I feel that I want to give them a try this year.
Here is the list that I am currently planning on taking. The only comp restrictions in place for this year is a 0-2 cap on all units except for troops, a maximum of 4 flyers in the army, and only 1 named special character in either the primary OR allies detachment.

Hyv3mynd started up the countdown last week to Da Boyz Gt here. he may be the only one willing to admit it is so close with all the preparation still required by many of us. I have been struggling with a list for Da Boyz - which has some light composition requirements. No more than 4 flyers or flying monstrous creatures and no entry can be replicated more than twice except troops.
Composition requirements have received a lot of flack over the last several years, but I really enjoy playing in the environment that emerges when players are compelled to bring a bit more diversity to their lists. The list I settled on this year (for now?) for Da Boyz includes:
