Quick Daemon Thoughts

I had the chance to grab a game this weekend at the local Millennium tournament and being there whet my appetite to get back into playing some more 40k games.  I am going to try to get out at least one or two nights before next month's tournament to practice/relax a bit.  Somehow, it seems like Spring leaves me with more energy than Winter when it comes to around the house and 40k.

The tournament at Millennium though is unique - and requires some more painting - in that it is 2000 points and up to 3 Forge World units with no Super Heavies, Gargantuans or D Weapons allowed.

I want to both work towards my casual list and bring something interesting/strong next month.  As a solid core, it is hard to go wrong with Flesh Hounds.  The Hounds tend to be weak against 2+ saves and armies with a lot of small arms fire - which means I need something that can either increase their durability (Grimoire, Telepathy Psyker) or is orthogonal to that threat vector - AV 12/13, S10, AP 1/2.  Towards that end, and based on the fun Daemon Engine list I want to build, here is what I am looking to bring along.

HQ
Herald of Khorne on Juggurnaut w/ Lesser Gift, Locus of Fury
Herald of Khorne on Juggurnaut w/ Lesser Gift
Herald of Khorne on Juggurnaut w/ Exalted Gift

Elites
-

Troops
10x Pink Horrors
10x Pink Horrors
12x Daemonettes
10x Plaguebearers

Fast Attack
16x Flesh Hounds
16x Flesh Hounds

Heavy Support
Soul Grinder w/ Baleful Torrent, Mark of Slaanesh
Soul Grinder w/ Baleful Torrent, Mark of Slaanesh

Formation
Helbrute Murder Pack
1x Helbrute w/ Heavy Flamer
1x Helbrute w/ Heavy Flamer
1x Helbrute w/ TLLC

Fortification
Aegis Defense Line w/ Comms Relay

I am a bit unsure on the Aegis - I had thought to possibly drop 1 Herald, 1 Pink Horrors with it to grab a Mastery 3 Sorcerer and Cultists for troops.  Overall though, I like the ability to Deep Strike the Helbrutes in and regardless of what Crazed result they grab, they can be useful.  I especially like the idea of getting to throw down 2 Heavy Flamer templates on a Fire Frenzy.  That said, I know many lists are well equipped to deal with AV 12, and I am wondering if I should further max out my Fast Attacks w/ Seekers, Slaanesh Herald and Fiends.  That is more traditional with how I have played in the past - but I really like the idea of adding the armor - especially since the Helbrutes gain IWND and coming in with 2 Soul Grinders as well present 5 hard targets to knock down before they assault into troops.

Also, what do I need to worry about with 3 Forgeworld units allowed?  I am not familiar enough with them to be sure.  With the new guard out, can this list hold up to their firepower too?

  1. you put down a lot of quick bodies.....I think this list can run with most any other. Im not so sure about the aegis either but then again I have never been a fan. Have you thought about a crimson slaughter ally? a sorcerer with divination is nice and if you took a forgefiend for one turn you could re-roll to hit and armor pen with 8 str 8 shots. Im only saying that because you seem a little walker bonkers at the moment.

    1. I actually really like the Forgefiend and Maulerfiend - my primary motivation not to include them at the moment is the painting burden - and I have not magnetized all my Forgefiend parts yet!

The Aegis is really there for the Comms relay - manipulating reserves to keep them out/in is really strong. I have also had a lot of success against a lot of armies using it to get an extra +1 or +2 on saves. Most armies I have seen use the Aegis suffer because it slows them down (not the case with hounds) it gives the enemy cover (not the case) or they want to sit behind it and be static. This one is really there to get that 1 extra turn of cover and that reserve manipulation.

  2. Why not drop the aegis for a level 3 Tzeentch herald and go for scriers gaze? All the other spells will help out too plus he will buff one unit of horrors

    1. The Aegis comes to 70 points, so the Tzeentch herald would only get to level 2. I had thought about it, but I was planning to reserve troops. I might still make that swap though, Forewarning would really make the Aegis redundant, Scryers is good and Misfortune can be brutal. The only power wasted really is Foreboding from that list.
